A Mai Tai Cocktail is a tropical and fruity alcoholic beverage that originated from California. Historically known as a Tiare cocktail, it is a blend of rum, lime juice, curaçao liqueur, Orgeat syrup and mint that signals the beautiful and sunny days of summer.

  • - 1/2 oz of Simple Syrup
  • - A sprig of Fresh Mint for garnishing

  • 2. Pour the white rum, dark rum, curaçao liqueur, fresh lime juice, orgeat syrup and the simple syrup into the shaker.
  • 3. Shake all the ingredients together until well mixed.
  • 4. Fill a glass (preferably a highball glass) with crushed ice.
  • 5. Strain the cocktail mixture into the glass.
  • 6. Garnish with the sprig of fresh mint.

Serving

  • Serve a Mai Tai cocktail in a chilled highball glass or a cocktail glass for that authentic tropical vibe. An additional garnish of fresh lime wheel or a slice of pineapple can also add an extra tropical aesthetic and flavor to the drink. This cocktail is perfect for pool parties, beach outings, or any casual get-togethers.

Tips

  • - All ingredients should be as fresh as possible for the best taste. Use freshly squeezed lime juice for best results.
  • - Try and ensure your white rum and dark rum are of a good quality. The better the rum, the better the Mai Tai.
  • - Add a cocktail umbrella for a fun and festive touch.
  • - Adjust the amount of syrup based on your preference for sweetness.
  • - Don't skip on the mint! It gives a great, refreshing flavor.

History

The Mai Tai cocktail was created in 1944 by Victor J. Bergeron, also known as Trader Vic. While competing with Don the Beachcomber, an iconic bar in Hollywood, Trader Vic used aged rum plus additions of lime, curaçao and rock candy to create this exotic drink. It became popular among the bar's Polynesian-themed drinks.
