New York Sour

The New York Sour cocktail is an elegant and refreshing blend of whisky, lemon, sugar and a float of red wine. This unique combination results in a cocktail that is both punchy and alluring, cradling the richness of the whisky and the fruitiness of the wine into a harmonious balance.

Cooking time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • - 2 ounces of rye whisky or bourbon
  • - 1 ounce of fresh lemon juice
  • - 1 ounce of simple syrup
  • - 1/2 ounce of red wine
  • - Cherry or lemon slice for garnish

Preparation

  • To make a New York Sour, start by taking a cocktail shaker and fill it halfway with ice. Add the whisky, lemon juice and simple syrup into the shaker, then shake vigorously for 30 seconds, until the outside of the shaker feels very cold. Strain the mixture into a large ice-filled glass. Carefully pour the red wine over the back of a spoon so that it floats on top of the drink.

Serving

  • For serving, the New York Sour is best enjoyed immediately so that the temperature and layers remain intact. Garnish with a cherry or lemon slice and serve it with a straw or stir for the option to mix the wine in.

Tips

  • 1. Use a good quality whiskey and a full-bodied red wine for the best results.
  • 2. Make sure to use fresh lemon juice as bottled juice can alter the taste.
  • 3. Pour the red wine carefully to achieve the perfect float.
  • 4. Adjust the amount of simple syrup if you prefer your cocktails more or less sweet.

History

The history of the New York Sour dates back to the late 19th century when it was known as the Continental Sour or Southern Whisky Sour. It's believed to have been named the "New York Sour" by a Chicago bartender in the 1880s who was impressed by the bartenders in New York.
