Old Fashioned

The Old Fashioned is a classic American cocktail, a symbol of the old-school, traditional approach to mixology. Considered as one of the "father" cocktails, it is made with sugar, water, bitters, and a good quality whiskey or bourbon.

Cooking time: 3 minutes

Ingredients

  • - 2 sugar cubes
  • - 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • - A splash of water
  • - 2 ounces bourbon (Rye whiskey can be used as an alternative)
  • - An orange twist
  • - A cherry for garnish

Preparation

  • 1. Place your sugar cubes in an old-fashioned glass and saturate them with the bitters.
  • 2. Add a splash of plain water.
  • 3. Muddle these ingredients together until the sugar has completely dissolved.
  • 4. Fill the glass with large ice cubes.
  • 5. Pour in your bourbon.
  • 6. Stir gently until the mix is well combined.
  • 7. Twist a slice of orange peel over the glass to release its essential oils then drop it in.
  • 8. Top it off with a cherry for garnishment.

Serving

  • This cocktail is best served in a short tumbler glass, also known as an old-fashioned glass, from which it gets its name. Enjoy it slowly to savor the nuanced flavors.

Tips

  • 1. Use large ice cubes. The larger the ice cube, the slower it melts, keeping your cocktail consistent for longer.
  • 2. Make sure everything is well-chilled before beginning, this includes your glass.
  • 3. Try using different types of bitters to add a unique spin to your Old Fashioned.

History

The Old Fashioned has stood the test of time and dates back to the early 1800s. It paved the way for many modern cocktails and is thought to have been given its name in the 1880s at a gentlemen's club in Louisville, Kentucky.
